SHELLFISH HEALTH DIAGNOSTICS

MSX, SSO and Dermo Disease Testing in Shellfish

RPC offers rapid, reliable testing of shellfish for Haplospridium nelsoni the causative agent of Multinucleate Sphere Unknown (MSX), Haplospridium costale the causative agent of Seaside Organism (SSO) and Perkinsus marinus the causative agent of Dermo disease.

Simultaneous detection for all three parasitic pathogens is offered by Multiplex Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) as well as Singleplex or Duplex qPCR for one or two pathogens, respectively. By adopting advanced diagnostic technology, we aim to enhance disease management strategies, reduce the risk of outbreaks, and support surveillance programs. This enables oyster farmers to detect infections early and take proactive measures.

SAMPLING REQUIREMENTS

Whole organisms can be sent to the laboratory for sectioning.  The shellfish should be sampled fresh and sent in a sealed leak proof insulated container on ice packs.  Alternatively, sampled tissue can be stored in 95% ethanol and sent to the laboratory for DNA extraction and  qPCR analysis.

PRICING/TURNAROUND

Pricing and turnaround times vary depending on number of samples submitted and pathogens being analyzed for.
