Powerful Innovations

RPC has been delivering innovative engineered solutions and technical services to the nuclear industry for over 25 years. The successes continued this past year when RPC completed two projects that significantly advanced how non-destructive testing (NDT) is conducted for nuclear reactor feeder pipes.

Magnetic Rubber Replica Kit
PowerInnovPhotoCANDU’s impeccable safety and up-time records are achieved through excellent design, effective inspection and maintenance. To aid in inspection, RPC developed a magnetic rubber replica kit for surface crack inspection in feeder pipes. The project involved development of the inspection technique, design, construction and testing. The product utilizes clamp-on moulds with air bladders, a special miniature magnetic yoke and power box and a specialized rubber injection system. The magnetic rubber is injected and when removed, there is a physical replica of the crack which can be retained and utilized for future monitoring and comparison purposes. This tooling was developed for NB Power and Hydro Quebec and is now the accepted CANDU Operator’s Group (COG) method to detect and archive tiny surface cracks on feeder pipe bends.

Remote Magnetic Particle and Radiographic Inspection Tools
The second innovation was the development of remote magnetic particle and radiographic inspection tools for Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL). It was developed to complete single feeder replacements in very difficult to access areas of the reactor. This project involved the complete design and construction of 12 sets of tooling to the rigorous Z299.2 quality assurance standard. The tools have been employed at Bruce Power, Pickering and Darlington nuclear plants in Ontario. The reviews from the field are very good and RPC is now developing concepts for the next generation tooling for the new CANDU ACR 1000 reactor.

A customer with a challenge. An innovative professional team. An effective solution. Another RPC success.
