A Fish Story

You
are what you eat. This fact has led to increasing concern about what is in
the food you eat.
The Michigan Fish Advisory is a data base containing information on contaminants found in fish for locations throughout the state of Michigan. It is part of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality's (MDEQ) comprehensive water quality monitoring program, an effort that has produced several years of data regarding contaminants.
MDEQ required analytical lab services for more than a dozen environment pollutants and dioxins. Examples are PCBs, DDT and mercury. Hundreds of samples are collected each year for analysis. MDEQ called on RPC's expertise for the analysis of these samples.
RPC has been providing the lab services for this project for several years and has had the opportunity to continually improve our service. In fact, efficiency improvements in the past year resulted in a 75% reduction in processing time.
The results of the program are being used to assess chemical contamination in fish from Michigan's surface waters. Fish contamination data are used to determine whether fish are safe for human and wildlife consumption and to evaluate the effectiveness of DEQ initiatives to reduce contaminants.
In this case, it is the fish telling the story about the environment.
